Say cheese! Sure that phrase is often used to get one to smile but when you visit The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills, an iconic and historic cheese and gourmet market, consider the classic phrase to be an invitation to enjoy some delicious cheese. The market has been around for more than 50 years and has been a must stop for visitors and locals alike. They’ve moved too! Yup, The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills has recently undergone a significant change moving from its original location on Beverly Drive to South Santa Monica Boulevard (9705 S Santa Monica Blvd), but fear not, loyal customers and curious new ones, because the store’s essence, quality, and friendly atmosphere are still ever present in its new home.
“It’s not just about cheese. It’s about culture,” says Dominick DiBartolomeo, the owner of The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills. He’s not only the heart and soul of the store, his passion for fine foods is evident as he shares stories of his family’s love of all things meats, cheese and community with pictures of family gatherings and generational businesses proudly displayed on the walls. This passion extends to every aspect of the store, from the vast selection of over 600 cheeses, cured meats, pastas, and sauces to the incredible wine collection perfect for pairing. You can also order a lunch to go with sandwiches and salads ready to satisfy your afternoon craving. As we walk in, it really does feel like a place where everyone knows your name. Familiar customers are greeted with a high five, and inquisitive visitors are warmly welcomed and quickly guided to what cheese, sandwich, spirit, or salad may be right for them. Be sure to take a minute to enjoy not only the nostalgia on the walls, but how well organized and thoughtfully The Cheese Store has organized its large bounty. They’ve created a space that’s homey and packed with goodies yet very easy to navigate even during a crowded afternoon.
If you’re craving a delicious gourmet sandwich, the Cheese Store offers a tempting array of options. Our two favorites were La Zucca, a vegetarian delight with fried zucchini and lemon ricotta, and La Macellaia, featuring Prosciutto, Ventricina, and Provolone as the stars of the show. We also recommend stopping by the store to grab the perfect items for a charcuterie board or grabbing sandwiches to go before a beach visit or a show at the Hollywood Bowl.
The experience here is very interactive and the staff encourages trying a few different samples. Owner Dom even suggests trying ones you may have closed the book on. For example, they have bleu cheese that is also subtle and mild and may just change your mind if you haven’t fancied yourself a bleu fan before.
Pro Tip: Enjoy the sample of the day. Ours was a delicious fresh Chevre with local peaches, drizzled with orange blossom honey from the Savannah Bee Company. We also were able to witness firsthand the culinary staff hand-make fresh pasta in the on-display mezzanine section.
The new location is a true foodie paradise for the LA community, but that’s not all. The store now ships its delectable products nationwide, so cheese enthusiasts from all over the country can savor their offerings. If you’re a connoisseur seeking unique imports or simply want to deepen your appreciation for fine foods and beverages, The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills will soon start offering monthly classes where you can learn to expertly pair cheeses with various wines and, now, even spirits like tequila. It’s a fantastic opportunity to elevate your culinary knowledge and have a blast while doing it.
The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills is unlike any market here in LA. It’s where you can hang out, explore, and indulge in the finest cheeses, wines, spirits, and gourmet treats.
