Culture Lifestyle Summer in LA

Our Top 12 Summer Shows to Watch Right Now

As much as we love roaming the city to find the hottest new LA attractions for you guys, we also love slipping into our cozies, and tuning into some real good TV. Summer is a great time to go outside, but when you need a little break, diving into a summer show or re-watch of a classic, like Gossip Girl on HBO Max, is just as groovy. This summer, there are a few new series to binge, new seasons to catch up on, and shows that have recently been re-added to streaming sites to watch over and over again. Here’s our top picks of the best summer shows to watch right now.

Comedies Worth The Watch

Hacks

Where to Watch: HBO Max

Hacks is the comedy darling (or darlings) we didn’t know we needed in our lives. Sure, it’s wrapped up season 3 and will be back for season 4, but this is a summer show to watch over and over again to give us the ultimate belly aches. Here’s the scoop about this show: after a scarce search for a job, young writer Ava Daniels (played by Hannah Einbinder) is forced to work for Deborah Vance (played by the iconic Jean Smart), a “has-been” older diva comedian. Despite their constant well-written banter and tiffs, Ava manages to bring Vance back as a ravishing top comedian. What we really love about this show is that it showcases real life and is so authentic about being a woman in Hollywood.

The Decameron

Where to Watch: Netflix

They say The Decameron is like Love Island but like back in the day – it’s a party that never stops and keeps you giggling. Our beloved Shoshanna, played by Zosia Mamet, from Girls, and Erin, played by Saoirse-Monica Jackson,  from Derry Girls will join comedy forces to make a decadent comeback with this dark medieval times comedy dropping July 25th. Based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s world-renowned 14th-century Italian book, it follows ten affluent young adults in 1348 during the Black Death plague. They end up abandoning their plagued city in Italy for an enchanting countryside getaway. It’s wild, sexy and funny. We can’t wait to make this one of our top summer shows to watch.

Delicious Drama

Bridgerton

Where to Watch: Netflix

If you’re anything like our EIC – Erika De La Cruz – you’ve already binged the entire 3rd season of BridgertonBut this season is so good that, you can literally watch on repeat this summer. Just as drama-filled and lavish as we anticipated, this diamond season focuses on the one crush we couldn’t wait to see happen.  Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan finds herself as the subject of Lady Whistledown’s gossip column due to her romance with Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton. Will they marry? Well watch for yourself and sip some tea while you’re at it.

The Bear

Where to Watch: Hulu/FX

This one is for all you foodies out there in need of a summer show to watch! The six-time Emmy Award-winning series, The Bear, is back for season 3 and we’re not gonna lie, we may have already watched every episode. Don’t worry – we won’t drop any spoilers. But just to bring you up to speed, the show stars Jeremy Allen-White and Ayo Edebiri, who play top chefs & partners to a revamped Chicago restaurant and who are on a quest to get a Michelin star. You really can’t take your eyes off of Jeremy – a.k.a Carmy – who is so, so good at playing the part of an obsessed chef making food look irresistible and gorgeous. We got a little taste of how the kitchen works in the show at Stella Artois’ “Let’s Do Dinner”Summer Series”. There was a chaotic menu to taste, inspired by the show and created by James Beard Award-winning chefs Chris Bianco from Pizzeria Bianco and Justin Pichetrungsi from Anajak Thai, and ice-cold Stella Artois of course. Stella is doing 3 more events like this, where they fuse together iconic food, lifestyle, music and entertainment around the country, and fans can still enter to win a spot at one of the remaining events. Mystery Thrillers

Only Murders in The Building

Where to Watch: Hulu

We genuinely can’t picture a more star-studded cast than Only Murders in The Building and we can’t wait until season 4 premiering this fall. But for a little catch up – why not make this one of your summer shows to watch and catch up. The series stars Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin, and will feature in season 4, A-listers Meryl Streep, Zach Galifianakis, Eva Longoria, Melissa McCarthy, and more. We also hear that in the new season, the trio moves to LA to solve the murder of Charles’ previous stunt double.

Eric

Where to Watch: Netflix

Don’t let this simple of a name show fool you. Eric has many moving parts and is one thriller you’ll want to watch all night this summer.  Marvel star Benedict Cumberbatch is on a hunt in Eric, a new Netflix mystery set in 1980s New York City. Vincent, played by Cumberbatch, is a divorced puppeteer searching for his 9-year-old son Edgar who has gone missing. After finding drawings of a monster named Eric under Edgar’s bed, Vincent attempts to find his son by befriending the imaginary monster.A little out there we know, but spooky enough for a summer’s night.

Dark Matter

Where to Watch: Apple Tv +

Apple TV+ just debuted another great psych thriller to put at the top pf our summer shows to watch. Dark Matter stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly and it’s about the “what if’s” throughout our lives. What if we didn’t go to college? What if we didn’t have a family? What if we didn’t marry the love of our lives? The show is based on the book of the same name by Blake Crouch ( who is also the creator, executive producer, and showrunner of the show), with the main character Dessen getting abducted by none other than himself. Yup, this is a twisty story where another version of Dessen is traveling across all multiverses to stop himself from one crucial choice he made in his life. We got a feel of what an alternate universe may look like with a one night only special immersive sensory experience at the Westfield Century City mall. Sony Pictures Television allowed us to step into an activation with some mind-bending worlds featured throughout the series and ultimately discover what it feels like to choose the path you’ve never taken. It was pretty cool, but the show even wilder!

And now its back on Netflix which is why it has become our top summer shows to watch.  Who doesn’t want to relive the dating life of New York columnist Carrie Bradshaw and when she met her Mr.Right a.k.a Mr. Big! How I Met Your Mother

Where to Watch: Netflix

How I Met Your Mother  is a series that stole our hearts in the 2010’s and now is finally available to stream on Netflix. ICYMI back then, it follows the life of Ted Mosby, a 27-year-old architect in NYC on a desperate quest to find his future wife. We know he does, but what’s so great about this show is that we don’t know WHO she is (well until the very last episode).  How I Met Your Mother is so cute and comedic, you can binge entire season in a a day.

For The Kids

Ariel

Where to Watch: Disney+

Disney Jr.’s Ariel is a fresh take on one of our favorite classic Disney animated films. It just debuted which is perfect timing since our little sisters and brothers and nieces and nephews are home from school. We suggest throwing up this show for them to watch, learn, and even dance their little hearts away. The series has some great Caribbean-style music and follows young mermaid princess Ariel as she embarks on underwater adventures with her family and friends throughout the fairytale kingdom of Atlantica. It’s colorful, cute, and also something to watch together with your little one first thing in the morning. Yup, it’s that good for adults. We joined the creative team of the series at NeueHouse in Hollywood for a screening and Q&A panel where they told us about the influences and the detail to making Ariel’s underwater world right.
