Hauser & Wirth

A heavyweight in the art world, Hauser & Wirth has two spots in LA, each with its own vibe. The West Hollywood location currently hosts L.A. Story, a group exhibition co-organized with Steve Martin that channels the quirky spirit of his 1991 film of the same name. The exhibition runs until January 4, 2025, and with free admission, it’s a no-brainer for art lovers. Downtown, Hauser & Wirth takes it up a notch in a historic, sprawling former flour mill, where shows like Firelei Báez: The fact that it amazes me does not mean I relinquish it and Jason Rhoades: DRIVE: The Garage run until early January. Make time to eat at Manuela, their in-house restaurant known for seasonal California fare—it’s as much an experience as the gallery itself.
The Mistake Room

An independent art space with global reach, The Mistake Room (TMR) is all about challenging norms and embracing mistakes as fuel for growth. Currently, Things with Feathers, organized with the Art Rise initiative, is on display, focusing on community healing and remembrance. One highlight is Sakkan Eku LA by Gisela McDaniel, a diasporic Chamorro artist who tells stories of resilience and survival through her immersive pieces. Before or after your visit, stop at Bestia in the Arts District for handmade pastas or Urth Caffé for a laid-back coffee break—both just a quick trip from the gallery.
The Mistake Room
New Image Art

In West Hollywood, New Image Art is a dynamic space known for its blend of street art, conceptual pieces, and experimental installations. The vibe here is raw and unfiltered, often challenging perceptions and giving visitors an immersive experience. Though it may be one of the great art galleries in Los Angeles, it feels more like an adult playground with something intriguing around every turn. Rooted in South LA’s Leimert Park, Art + Practice is a foundation-driven space that combines art with activism. Partnering with the California African American Museum, A+P offers free, museum-curated exhibitions that highlight underrepresented voices and foster youth programs. This nearly 20,000-square-foot campus is a community anchor, providing a space where creativity and advocacy intersect.

The Balloon Museum

The Balloon Museum is the newly opened immersive art museum you need to check out. It’s bringing the critically acclaimed show “Let’s Fly” to Ace Mission Studios in Los Angeles. The exhibition will debut Balloon Museum’s newest work, designed by Oakland, CA-based LED artist Christopher Schardt. Named “Mariposa,” the 26-foot-wide sculpture debuted at Burning Man in 2023 and is illuminated with over 39,000 full-color LEDs. In addition to Schardt’s work, “Let’s Fly” features the work of 21 global artists. Since its globe-trotting journey kicked off in 2021 in Rome, over 4.4 million people have experienced the Balloon Museum’s one-of-a-kind artistry and breathtaking pieces.
