Emmy Awards Watch List: Our Guide To TV’s Biggest Night

Calling all our fellow TV lovers! It’s that time of year again when we celebrate the best of the small screen. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards are just around the corner ( this Sunday the 15th to be exact), and if you’re like us, we want to be ready. So we’ve put together an epic list to watch all the BEST shows before the Emmy awards. Yup boo, we’re here to give you a full on TV show binge and get you ready for the big night! So grab your popcorn and scroll on to find the shows we know will take home gold. Here is our unofficial, but very official, Emmy Awards watch list!

Drama (Not For Your Mama!)

Man oh man, don’t we love a good drama! Some, your mama won’t like (any Fallout fans out there?), and some with all the highs, lows, twist and turns…like Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Amazon Prime Video. One show we want to rewatch…and really everyone should watch, is The Crown on Netflix. This was the final season, and it covered every major Royal event, from Princess Diana’s death to the beginnings of Prince William’s relationship to Kate Middleton. This is an easy watch before the Emmy Awards, and easily “bingeable.” Another show – and the most highly anticipated drama of the year, Shōgun from FX, is also worth the watch. It’s leads this year’s nominations with a whopping 25 nominations. Here’s what you can expect from this show…action, stunning visuals, authentic costumes, 17th-century Japanese history, and more! But will it sweep the awards? We’ll have to wait and see! We’re not sure if can beat our hands down favorite –  The Morning Show on Apple TV. Icons Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are also both nominated (and up against each other, crazy!). We love this drama because it’s such a good behind the scenes look at a  major morning news program. The dialogue is both comedic and powerful.

The LA Girl’s Emmy Winning Pick: The Crown. I mean, how can they not give it one more standing ovation.

Comedy Standouts

This is obviously no surprise – but The Bear on FX is at the top of our Emmy Award watch list. This critically acclaimed “dramedy” racked up 23 nominations and for good reason…it’s that GOOD! Jeremy Allen White  – the show’s top star – is also nominated for lead actor. He’s breathed life into Carmy – the fine-dining chef who returns home to manage his family’s struggling sandwich shop. With its raw emotions, chaotic pacing, and heartfelt performances, The Bear serves up more than just laughs. The next show we’re binging … Only Murders in the Building on Hulu. Selena Gomez, Martin Short, & Steve Martin make this murder mystery show hilariously addictive. Our girl Selena’s stellar performance is sure to take home gold too. She’s nominated for Lead Actress too! But these shows do have some competition. Abbot Elementary on ABC, the “mock-umentary” style series that follows teachers at a public school – could come in and sweep this year. We’re not going to lie, we fangirl’d super hard at our last WB Tour when we saw Quinta Brunson drive by us in a golf cart.

The LA Girl’s Emmy Winning Pick: The Bear. It won last year, but this season is definitely Emmy worthy.

Best in Limited Series

If you haven’t had the chance to watch Baby Reindeer on Netflix, watch now. The show scooped up 11 nominations and this limited series will definitely take home some gold. Although this show is super dark and deals with some themes that maybe are NSFW, the story and the intrigue with the characters is what will get you hooked to it. Another series that you have to watch before the Emmy Awards is Lessons in Chemistry on Apple TV.  It’s a beautiful show that’s both historic, smart and clean enough to watch with the kids. Brie Larsons stars as a lab tech in the 60’s who takes a job as host of a cooking show and uses that platform to really educate women about science. You’ll feel inspired and empowered when you watch. But we wouldn’t be surprised if FX’s Fargo comes out winning in the end. The show is everything you want from the original 1996 film and more. This year, the story follows a midwestern housewife in Minnesota who is not who she says she is. We also love that John Hamm is the star of this particular anthology.

The LA Girl’s Emmy Winning Pick: True Detective: Night CountryThe HBO show running up against all of the aforementioned and honestly its a great crime story with a great cast.

The Basics: When, Where, and How to Watch

We hope this little list has inspired you to get your TV watch on before the Emmy Awards. If you’d rather just be surprised on Emmy night, then go for it and watch the shows later. But here are some award basics. The Emmy Awards will be hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy. Two generations of comedic genius, and we can’t wait to see who they will lovingly roast during TV’s biggest night. Watch them this Sunday, September 15th at 5pm PST on ABC. You can also stream the show LIVE on Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV,  or Sling TV. The Emmys will also be available next day on Hulu from September 16th to 22nd. And pssst… they’re being held at the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE. So if you want to head out to catch a glimpse of the stars, make your way there.
