The Best Greenhouses & Nurseries For A Secret Garden Aesthetic

There’s so much flower power in Los Angeles with a plethora of both public gardens and private plant collections that feature botanicals from all over the world, some from our very own city. In fact, this is one very cool and green way to support local communities: buy a plant from a nursery or greenhouse living in our own backyard. Purchasing is one way to contribute, but even a casual visit with a bestie to stroll and smell the roses, lilies, ferns, or whatever else comes down your path, is another way to show our Angeleno support. Plus, nurseries are great for a phone-free day or for some epic content too. We’ve hand-picked our favorite nurseries & the best greenhouses in LA that are perfect for a green day out. Get ready to channel that inner  “plant mom” dedication, because one step inside any of these spots will inspire you to pick up more than just a bouquet.

Pro Tip: Greenhouse employees are extremely knowledgeable about plant care so definitely ask them for tips and advice when picking out your greens.

Rolling Greens

Location: Culver City, Studio City, Beverly Grove (& soon Santa Monica)

There are many leafy reasons why Rolling Greens is consistently named “Best Los Angeles Nursery.” Each LA spot ( plus a pop up in Orange County)  has its unique aesthetic and botanical masterpieces. We especially love the selection of vintage treasures and pottery of all shapes and sizes along with the Artistry Bar where their plant baristas can help you create the arrangement of your dreams. You can truly find any plant under the sun at Rolling Greens.  They are one of the best greenhouses around. You can also host an event – intimate or large scale – at one of their locations in DTLA or Studio City. Plus, they have many seasonal offerings and delightful workshops to take advantage of as well, including a Woodland Arrangement, &  Moss Art Workshop.

Hommes + Gardens ESTUDIO

This gorgeous sanctuary of sustainable living in West Hollywood is the byproduct of plant artist & landscape designer Michael O’Brien who specializes in organic gardening and maintains edible garden for his A-list clientele. His ESTUDIO has a range of sophisticated yet approachable home accessories and garden objects, as well as rare indoor and outdoor plants. He also has so many tips over on TikTok. Our favorite features in Hommes + Gardens include the tranquil back patio (it’s like a mini oasis from the city), the edible garden showcasing season and locally grown produce, their gorgeous selection of small succulents and their life sized greenery. Hommes + Gardens is committed to curation that is eco-conscious and responsibly sourced, so you can rest assured knowing you are giving the right plants a happy home. Sign up for Michael’s house plant workshop ( they’ve got a special Valentines Day one coming up too) to really get your hands dirty and design a beautiful piece for your “HOMME”.

You’ve probably seen some of her work too at  the W Hotel & Fred Segal Santa Monica. Big Red Sun can also host special events, even weddings, at their Rose Ave location & their Austin, Texas location. Yup their big in Texas too!

Sunset Gardens

Location: 4368 W Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles

Looking for that lemon tree or basil plant that you’ve had on your Pinterest page forever? Let your dreams become a reality at Sunset Gardens, a small family-run garden right on Sunset in Silverlake. We love Sunset Gardens for the meticulous care of their succulents, house plants, and outdoor plants, along with their dedication to maintaining their greenhouse and helping customers understand the proper aftercare to ensure healthy and sustained growth.

Mickey Hargitay Plants

Founded in 1980, Mickey’s is an eclectic garden oasis in the heart of LA, and brings an earthy escape from the Hollywood hustle. Plants just feel more fun at Mickey’s, and it’s a perfect spot to pick up a peace lily or bird of paradise plant for that perfect birthday or housewarming gift. The fiddle leaf figs, sun-loving ficus, and low-maintenance polka dot plants are some of our favorites, and we consider ourselves part of their oh-so-very Hollywood “fandom” name, Mickey’s Plant Groupies.

Theodore Payne

Location: 10459 Tuxford Street, Sun Valley

This full-service non-profit nursery features native plants, seeds, display gardens, hiking trails, and extensive plant production areas. You can spend a whole day here learning about the role of native plants in local ecology and admiring the 22 acres of canyon land in which Theodore Payne sits. Walk into their best greenhouses on site and find your dream floral or potted plant in any color of the rainbow, or pick up a Seed Collection Kit to grow your home garden from scratch. We love this place for its serene and quiet time vibes.
