Last week, I featured a non-profit organization called WriteGirl, an LA-based creative writing and mentoring organization that has been empowering teen girls through writing for 15 years. 100% of proceeds go to help empower underserved teen girls!
You can order a one-of-a-kind poem starting at $10 written by a WriteGirl teen, so I had to order one! I chose a Perspective level poem which allows you to pick a theme, which of course was “The LA Girl.” I received the poem and it gave me such a feeling of joy and inspiration. I am so happy that there are people out there who are doing this and empowering creativity in teen girls. The poem was written by Addissyn House, age 16.

How your money helps
Since 2001, WriteGirl has been giving girls the power of the pen to help them write their way to brilliant futures. For 14 years, we have guided 100% of our teen girls to not only graduate from high school, but also enroll in college.
When you buy a poem, your contribution is helping us meet our goal of raising $15,000 to support our next season. What will this funding go toward? Just for starters:
- The recruitment and training of more women writers to become effective mentors
- The much-needed intensive outreach to existing and potential WriteGirl mentees
- Writing supplies (think of all the paper and ink we use for workshops!)
What does WriteGirl do?
Imagine 200 women and girls in one room, writing and sharing their ideas with each other. Sometimes the room is filled with booming chatter, and at other times, the silence amplifies pens scribbling on pages. One Saturday each month, WriteGirl harnesses the talent of some of LA’s most well-known women writers, bringing them to workshops as guest mentors. Screenwriters like Nancy Meyers, journalists like Patt Morrison, songwriters like Lisa Loeb, and poets like Suzanne Lummis not only share their expertise, but also inspire a population of girls who may never have imagined themselves as writers. These mentors show the girls what they’re capable of creating.
