There’s no denying it, we are in a drought! Even though we’ve had some rain that has helped out in the northern part of the state, we’re still in trouble down in Southern California. It’s up to us to do our part and find ways to save water throughout our daily routine.
I’ve partnered with Pantene to give you ideas on how to save water and help alleviate the SoCal drought. Here’s 20 ways to save water, every little bit makes a difference!
In the Bathroom
1. Shorten your shower by using Pantene, The ShowerGlass Limited Edition.
Showers account for nearly 17% of all household water usage and last, on average, about 10 minutes. The Association of California Water Agencies and The California Department of Water Resources’ website, SaveOurWater.com, suggests taking a 5 minute shower instead of a 10 minute shower in hopes of saving between 12.5 – 25 gallons of water per shower.
To help drive awareness for water conservation, Pantene introduced the ShowerGlass Limited Edition, with innovative packaging and product technology designed to help consumers save water by taking shorter showers.
Each shampoo within this new line will feature a five minute hour glass timer designed to help consumers clean and condition their hair faster. Simply flip over the shampoo bottle with the ShowerGlass to indicate when you should end your shower.
2. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth and save up to 4 gallons a minute. That’s up to 200 gallons a week!
3. Consider getting a dual-flush toilet. It has two flush options: a half-flush for liquid waste and a full-flush for solid waste.
4. Plug the sink instead of running the water to rinse your razor and save up to 300 gallons a month.
5. When washing your hands, turn the water off while you lather.
6. Check your faucets and shower heads for leaks. One drip every second adds up to five gallons per day!
7. While you wait for hot water in the shower, collect the running water and use it to water plants.
In the Kitchen
8. When hand washing dishes, don’t let the water run. Fill one basin with wash water and the other with rinse water.
9. Designate one glass for your drinking water each day, or refill a water bottle. This will cut down on the number of glasses to wash
10. Store drinking water in the refrigerator rather than letting the tap run every time you want a cool glass of water.
11. Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.
12. Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.
13. Don’t use running water to thaw food. For water efficiency and food safety, defrost food in the refrigerator.
14. Use the proper pan size for cooking. Large pans may require more cooking water than necessary.
15. Collect the water you use while rinsing fruit and vegetables. Use it to water house plants and flowers.
16. Compost rather than feeding the garbage disposal, which takes a lot of water to run.
In the Laundry Room
17. Match the water level to the size of the load.
18. Use cold water when washing dark clothes, it saves water and energy, and helps your clothes retain their color.
19. Beware the permanent press cycle! The permanent press cycle on most washing machines uses an extra five gallons of water for the additional rinse.
20. When shopping for a new washing machine, compare resource savings among Energy Star models. Some can save up to 20 gallons of water per load.
