How to Have a Killer Workout Session

How to Have a Killer Workout Session - Gunnar Peterson and Propel

I love a killer workout because it makes me feel and look so accomplished! I think it’s the reason most people work out and find the motivation to do so. Luckily, I was able to work with Propel on their #MadetoMove campaign and they provided me and a few other bloggers several opportunities to workout with celebrity trainer, Gunnar Peterson and his team. Here’s what I learned working with Propel and Gunnar on how to have a killer workout session.

Always start with a warm up

Every time we worked out with Gunnar and his team, we always started with a warm up. We stretched and got the heart rate up to prevent injury and wake up the cardiovascular system. To me, this is the best way to get yourself physically and mentally prepared for the next hour or so.

Be aware of your form

This is what I most struggle with and is one of the most important things to be aware of when working out. Proper form is crucial to getting the most effective workout and if you’re working with a trainer, they can keep an eye on you to make sure you are doing the exercises properly. This can also be your workout buddy’s job and you can keep each other in check when one is not activating their core or hyperextending their elbows (yes, I’m talking about planks!).

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Since we are sweating like crazy during Gunnar’s workouts, we have to make sure to hydrate properly. He recommends drinking Propel, the only water with enough electrolytes to put back what you lose in sweat.

Eat right

I always feel better when I have a little something to eat before a workout such as a protein or granola bar. The worst is when you’re in the middle of a workout and your stomach starts growling. Unfortunately, this happens to me all the time.

Rest

I love how Gunnar’s workouts always has rest incorporated in between routines. It gives you time to normalize your breathing, hydrate, center your mind and urge yourself to keep going.

Work out with a partner or team

As with most things, it’s easy to workout when you have a partner or a team doing it with you. It keeps you accountable for showing up and helps with motivation. I realized that when there’s a trainer around or when I take a class, I take things more seriously and have a much better workout.

Have fun

Most importantly, you should have fun! A killer workout will do you no good if you’re miserable during the experience. It’s best to do exercises you enjoy and also look good doing!
